Abstract

Fast growth in urban housing has caused a continuous build-up of wooden waste.At the same time, the small living space in Type 36 homes requires careful planning of the layout and suitable furniture choices. This design project combines reclaimed wood with hollow iron to create an integrated furniture item: a versatile Pop-Up reading rack that is eco-friendly, visually appealing, durable, and space-efficient. The design approach started by gathering data through observing Type 36 house designs in Pekanbaru, reviewing existing literature on sustainable design and ergonomics, and conducting interviews with local residents and individuals who collect reclaimed wood. The data were examined using a 5W+1H comparative method to identify the concept, purpose, and intended users, then presented through moodboards, sketches, and scaled drawings.Afterward, prototypes were created and tested. A hexagonal structure inspired by the honeycomb pattern was used to help spread the weight evenly across the iron framework.The dimensions were carefully chosen based on measurements of people aged between 15 and 60 to ensure both comfort and safety. The outcome is a minimalist industrial-style unit that combines three functions: a book storage rack, a reading table, and a chair, with an overall height measuring 180 centimeters. The chair can be extended during use by a pull-push and slide Pop-Up mechanism and easily folded back into the main shelving unit. The blend of naturally textured reclaimed wood, finished with a clear matte coating, and strong black matte-painted iron creates an unfinished look that defines the industrial style. This design contributes to academic discussions on sustainable product design and provides a realistic approach for improving the use of materials and making better use of space in small homes
